Matagarup Crossing
The project for Heirisson Island features a bridge designed as a simple yet symbolic gesture that spans two disconnected sides of the island, highlighting both connection and division by water.
The zig-zag form reflects the movement of desire paths along the river’s edge, offering views of Optus Stadium and Matagarup Bridge. Positioned low to the water, the bridge’s cantilevered sections and sequenced bronze railing interact with shifting gold reflections, symbolising Kambarang (second Spring) and the indentations of mudflats that once surrounded the area. The design encourages reflection on the island’s history prior to colonisation, while fulfilling practical needs and aspirations of visitors. The solid structure embodies the permanence of Indigenous culture, connection, and the sovereign authority of Heirisson Island.
