Leisure Laboratory
Honouring the historical and social significance of the former Chemistry Centre, the Inter-War Functionalist building located on the outskirts of Perth CBD emerges as an artistic homage and revival of the architectural style and visionary legacy of Willem M. Dudok.
The design preserves the original white face-brick walls, roof structure, and heritage ribbon windows while introducing bold primary colours to add scale and eccentricity. These colours define various spaces, reflecting the experimental nature of the former science laboratory. This transformation accommodates diverse activities, including visual arts, reading areas, workspaces, exhibition spaces, and a small café and retail shop. The Leisure Laboratory aims to reignite the spirit of culture and leisure back into the city, with a vibrant revival that resonates with the site’s storied past.
